Someone once told me that there is no such thing as “the Vatican” if one means a monolithic institution where everyone thinks alike. Read John Allen’s “All the Pope’s Men” to see for yourself. Just as some at the Holy See drop the ball in communicating effectively, others do a marvelous job. These days there is a conference in Rome (hosted by the Gregorian Pontifical University) on the theory of evolution. The Church is represented there in a thoughtful and intelligent manner. Cardinal Levada of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) remarked that faith and evolution can go together. The attitude towards “creationism” is quite cool and not really taken very seriously.
Our Church has such a rich legacy of faith, science, culture and social action. It’s great when it comes together in such a positive way.
