B16 in the US and his humour!

The Washington DC’s Metro put together an ad to encourage people to use the Metro when attending the Papal Mass in Washington this week. It was a cute ad, with images of a “bobble-head” Benedict XVI riding on the transit system.  Reports are that the Archdiocese of Washington was not impressed and complained which resulted in the ad being pulled.

A “vatican commentator” responded to the incident by posting an interesting quote from the Pope in a 2006 interview with German media:

I’m not a man who constantly thinks up jokes. But I think it’s very important to be able to see the funny side of life and its joyful dimension and not to take everything too tragically. I’d also say it’s necessary for my ministry. A writer once said that angels can fly because they don’t take themselves too seriously. Maybe we could also fly a bit if we didn’t think we were so important.

  1. In December, my wife and I met Benedict XVI at the Paul VI Center as part of a group of sposi novelli pilgrims. I can attest to his warmth, humour and the ever present twinkle in his eye. He truly embodies a joy-filled faith. At the same time I must say I dissapprove of this commercial. To be funny something has to allude to a truism, but the bobble head doll doesn’t even remotely look like Benedict XVI and therefore, the entire commercial comes off as either creepy or just lame.

There’s a difference between genuine good natured fun and caricature and ridicule. How can we know the difference? Apply the ecumenical test. Recast that commercial using a doll representing another culture or religion and see how funny people will think it is. How about a Muhammed doll on the crosstown bus or one of those racist Mammy dolls of, say, Martin Luther King riding up the subway escalator to promote MLK day in Washington.

Well now…you wouldn’t dream of laughing at THAT, would you? So how is it that this commercial is funny again? It isn’t. Catholics regard Benedict XVI as the only human being authorized to speak in Jesus Christ’s name. He isn’t some random celebrity the media can declare open season on. The drive-by media should be shamed into removing this veiled insult against the Holy Father and our faith.
